The differences between species are smaller than the similarities, but knowing them helps you set realistic expectations and avoid a handful of species-specific mistakes that can otherwise cost you a cutting unnecessarily. All three also share a common growth habit worth understanding before you start: they're vining aroids that produce roots at nodes along the stem naturally, even while still attached to the parent plant, which is exactly why cutting-based propagation works so reliably for this particular group of houseplants compared to species that don't share this growth pattern.
Propagating pothos
Pothos is widely considered the easiest houseplant to propagate, and it's a genuinely reasonable first project if you've never propagated anything before, largely thanks to how forgiving it is of minor mistakes that would derail a trickier species. Cut a length of vine with at least two to three nodes, remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline, and place the cutting in water in bright, indirect light. Pothos typically shows visible root growth within one to two weeks and is usually ready to pot up within four weeks. A single long pothos vine can often be cut into several separate multi-node sections, each capable of rooting into its own independent plant, making it an efficient way to multiply a single mature plant into several new ones without any additional purchase.
Propagating monstera
Monstera propagation follows the same node-based principle, but success rates improve meaningfully when the cutting includes an aerial root — the brown, finger-like growths monstera produces along its stem in the wild to anchor onto trees and absorb additional moisture from the humid rainforest air around it. A cutting with at least one node, one leaf, and an aerial root roots faster and more reliably than one with a node and leaf alone, since the aerial root gives the cutting a head start on water absorption while new roots are developing beneath the surface. Monstera cuttings typically take three to six weeks to show root development, somewhat longer than pothos, and benefit from slightly warmer conditions — a windowsill that drops significantly at night can slow monstera rooting more noticeably than it affects the more temperature-tolerant pothos.
Propagating philodendron
Philodendron, particularly the popular trailing varieties like heartleaf philodendron and 'Brasil,' propagates almost identically to pothos, and the two are frequently confused by beginners due to their genuinely similar appearance and care needs, to the point that mislabeled plants at nurseries and big-box stores are a fairly common occurrence. Cut below a node with at least one leaf attached, root in water or moist soil, and expect visible roots within one to three weeks. Upright, non-climbing philodendron varieties (sometimes called self-heading philodendrons) are somewhat less commonly propagated from stem cuttings since they don't produce the same long trailing vines that make node-based cuttings straightforward, but division of an established clump — carefully separating naturally occurring offshoots at the base — is often a more practical multiplication method for these particular varieties instead.
Propagating variegated cultivars
Variegated cultivars of all three species — including 'Marble Queen' and 'N'Joy' pothos, variegated monstera (often called Monstera albo or Thai Constellation), and variegated philodendron 'Brasil' — introduce an extra consideration during propagation that solid green cultivars don't require. Variegation patterns can vary significantly between individual leaves and even individual sections of the same vine, and a cutting taken from a heavily variegated section doesn't guarantee the new growth will maintain the same variegation level once it establishes. For highly prized, expensive variegated cuttings like Monstera albo, it's worth selecting a cutting with variegation present specifically at the node itself, not just on the leaf, since variegation at the growth point is a somewhat better, though still not perfect, predictor of variegated new growth than leaf variegation alone. This is a genuinely more advanced and less predictable aspect of propagation than working with solid green cultivars, and even experienced propagators sometimes get reverted, all-green growth from a variegated cutting despite doing everything correctly.
Propagation by division as an alternative
Beyond stem cuttings, philodendron and, to a lesser extent, monstera can sometimes be propagated by division — separating an already-rooted offshoot or a plant with multiple growth points into two separate, independently rooted plants without waiting through a rooting period at all. This works best on mature specimens that have produced multiple stems from the base, which is more common in upright philodendron varieties than in the primarily vining forms of pothos and monstera. Division has the advantage of producing an already-rooted plant immediately, skipping the multi-week rooting period entirely, though it requires an established, multi-stemmed parent plant to begin with, and it's generally a lower-risk technique overall since you're separating existing roots rather than encouraging entirely new ones to form from scratch.

Troubleshooting each species
Pothos cuttings that won't root
Pothos is unusually forgiving, so a cutting that fails to root after several weeks is most often a sign of a missed node in the original cut, water that's gone stagnant for too long between changes, or a cutting taken from an unhealthy or stressed section of the parent plant rather than from vigorous new growth. Double-checking that the submerged portion of the cutting includes an actual node, and switching to a stricter weekly water-change schedule, resolves the majority of pothos rooting failures encountered in practice.
Monstera cuttings that rot before rooting
Monstera cuttings are somewhat more prone to rot than pothos, particularly in cooler water or when water changes lag behind schedule for more than a week or so. A cutting that develops a soft, mushy, or blackened cut end before any root growth appears has usually rotted rather than simply being slow to root, and at that point it's best to make a fresh cut higher up the stem, above the rotted section, and restart the process with cleaner water and more frequent changes going forward.
Philodendron cuttings that root but grow slowly afterward
Once potted, philodendron cuttings sometimes show a pause in visible growth for several weeks even after roots have clearly established, which is a normal adjustment period as the plant shifts energy from root development back toward leaf production above the soil line. This is different from a cutting that's actively declining — yellowing, dropping leaves, or soft stem tissue are the signs that indicate an actual problem rather than a normal, temporary growth pause.
Popular cultivars worth knowing
Each of these three plants comes in numerous named cultivars, and while the propagation process is essentially identical across cultivars within a species, it's useful to recognize the more common ones you're likely to encounter. Pothos cultivars include 'Golden,' 'Marble Queen,' 'Neon,' and 'Manjula,' each with different variegation patterns but identical care and propagation needs. Monstera cultivars include the standard Monstera deliciosa, the smaller Monstera adansonii (sometimes called Swiss cheese vine), and the rare, expensive variegated forms mentioned above. Philodendron cultivars span an especially wide range, from the ubiquitous heartleaf philodendron to 'Brasil,' 'Micans,' and 'Pink Princess,' the last of which commands a significant price premium in the houseplant trade specifically because of its striking, genetically unstable pink variegation.
Tips to speed up rooting for all three
- Propagate during the active growing season — spring through early summer — when all three species root fastest and most reliably, thanks to naturally higher hormone activity and more stored energy in the parent plant.
- Keep cuttings in bright, indirect light, not direct sun, which can overheat water containers and stress leaves that don't yet have functioning roots to support them through that added stress.
- Change propagation water every five to seven days to prevent bacterial buildup, which can rot the cut end before roots have a real chance to form and establish.
- Maintain warmer ambient temperatures, ideally somewhere in the 65–80°F range, since all three species root more slowly in cooler conditions.
- Consider rooting hormone for monstera specifically, since it roots more slowly than pothos or philodendron and benefits more noticeably from the extra assistance a hormone treatment can provide.
After rooting: potting up and early care
Once roots reach roughly one to two inches long for any of these three plants, they're ready to pot into soil. Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix as described in our potting soil guide, and keep the newly potted cutting in slightly higher humidity for the first one to two weeks while it adjusts from water roots to soil roots, which have a somewhat different structure suited to different conditions. Hold off on fertilizing for the first month, and resist the urge to check root development by pulling the cutting up repeatedly, which disturbs the developing root hairs and can slow overall establishment considerably compared to leaving the new roots undisturbed.
